Visual and Performing Arts Magnet
Dodson’s Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) Magnet students will engage in explorations of the arts and analyze how they impact individual lives and our society as a whole. Becoming critical thinkers, problem solvers, literate individuals, digital citizens, healthy individuals, and lifelong learners are valued learning objectives at our school, and Dodson’s rigorous academic program coupled with our visual and performing arts curriculum are the vehicles in which to achieve these goals.
Dodson’s Visual and Performing Art Magnet curriculum will be innovative as it will stress dance, digital imaging, film making, instrumental and vocal music, visual arts, and theater. The academic core classes' curriculum will blend the Common Core Standards with the Visual and Performing Arts Content Standards for California Public Schools supported by the Arts Instructional Guides set by LAUSD for grades sixth, seventh, and eighth. Each art class will have a focused set of standards depending on the discipline. VAPA students will be urged, within the limits of graduation/culmination requirements, to explore the diverse spectrum of visual and performing arts offered or select to specialize in one aspect of the performing arts. Students will participate in a variety of arts classes which may include any combination of exploratory art, art production, beginning drama, exploratory theater, technical theater, dance, introductory choir, general art, film appreciation and film-making.
Our VAPA students are given learning experiences designed to encourage academic growth, allow for individual difference, and foster the development positive self-concept. Our mission is to teach academic skills and character traits that prepare all students for higher education as well as the 21st century job market. Dodson’s Visual and Performing Arts Magnet is a versatile, three-year program reflecting the demographic diversity of its students. It will provide an engaging and challenging instructional program that integrates the Arts throughout the curriculum. Since the arts is a language that can communicate across racial, social, educational, and economic barriers and reach all demographics, inclusion of various homogeneous groups-English Language Learners, English Only Learners, students with disabilities, gifted and talented individuals, at-risk and Title I students-will create a heterogeneous membership that reflects cultural and racial diversity.
